“I made the wrong choice to lead the mixed pitch, instead of the steep ice pitch, getting into Mount Huntington’s West Face Couloir, during our second attempt. Somewhere on that pitch, I let loose a whole lot of ice that landed directly on my partner. It knocked him off his stance and left him swinging from the anchors until he collected himself. Most of that ice nailed him straight on the noggin, but the Petzl Meteor III kept the contents intact. The dents were there, but that helmet stayed intact as well. I had my doubts that this foam helmet would survive the trip to Anchorage, much less three weeks of me knocking down ice and stones on my partner’s head. That same helmet still gets out more times than it’s hard plastic counterpart. As does mine. I take mine everywhere, and I never worry about its durability.
