| Little sister to the Switch 36, Osprey bills the Switch 16 for ideal for shorter tours or lift-accessed backcountry. Here at Wildy X, we've found the Switch 16 to be the perfect size for all-day backcountry ski tours as well. The SnowShed backpanel doesn't accumulate snow on those big powder days. Carry lunch on in the zippered top pocket and access your gear through the hatchback style to lid. Internal organization stows all of the snow study tools perfectly. |

I like 'em small (my ski pack, that is). I really want to enjoy my hard-earned backcountry tele turns as lightly encumbered as possible. The best full-day winter backcountry ski pack for me is the one that will be just big enough to carry all of my essentials including skis, and not a thing more.
This is what is in my pack every time I go ski touring:
-Shovel
-Probe pole
-Slope meter
-Basic 1st aid kit w/ matches and Iodine
-Headlamp w/spare batteries
-Space blanket
-Goggles
-1.5 l water
-Down jacket
-Thermos of hot tea
-High-calorie foods like nuts, chocolate, and cheese
The Switch 16 can carry all of this with still enough room to stow an 8 oz. flask, for when the going gets Scotish. It is a ski pack made by one of the most innovative backpack manufacturers in the field today. This translates into a design that has considered the movement of the skiier and has maximized the effectiveness of load carry. Designed with slightly more volume at the top, it has a ski-specific weight-distribution- I am turtle, and this, my shell. Internally-routed hydration doesn't freeze and I skin uphill a well-hydrated beast. With gloved hands, I open and close zippers and straps and buckles freely and get to exactly what I want with minimal effort. Even seemingly insignificant details like hypalon-coated rounded zipper loops turn a struggle into a snap. Dual hip belt pockets keep the treats always close at hand.
Summary: This little jobbie is tight!
